Obituaries

of Dexter June went to be with her Lord May 7, 2015. She was at home with her family at the time of her death. June was born in Iron River, MI on February 24, 1918. She was the sixth of nine children to William and Teckla (Helstrom) Aiken. She moved to the Dexter area in 1937 and worked as a ward helper at the U of M Hospital for two years. She met her husband Earl when he was working in the U.P. with the U of M Forestry School. They married in 1939 and resided on the Dexter Township family farm for the rest of their lives. 

June worked for Dexter Community Schools in the food service department for eight years. She was a charter member of the Dexter American Legion Auxiliary Post 557 serving as President and Past President for many years. She was also an active volunteer at the VA hospital.  She also enjoyed 35 years on a local bowling league at the Dexter Bowling Alley.  June was a longstanding member of Faith Lutheran Church and active in Faith Ladies Aid. June’s summer activities included camping at Riker and Four Mile Lake. She also enjoyed traveling with her sister and the Senior Citizens’ group to Scandinavia, Egypt, Hawaii, Venezuela and Alaska.  Canning home grown fruits and vegetables and baking traditional Swedish coffee cakes with family members were a favorite pastime.  June always took great pride in her appearance and fashion. She had a love for flowers and bird watching. June spent many years enjoying her grandchildren, setting examples of graciousness, kindness, and love of family and life. She was the family matriarch and will be missed terribly. She is survived by siblings Bob Aiken and Carmen Brey; daughters, Sharon Abrass, Terry (Ed) Stacey and Julie Knight; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; siblings Clyde “Dutch”, Marge, Earl, Roy, Bill, Ruth; two grandchildren, Lori and James Richards; and son-in law James Knight.

A memorial service was held at Faith Lutheran Church, 9575 N. Territorial Rd, Dexter, MI on Monday, May 18 at 11:00 am. The family received friends at the church from 10- 11. A luncheon followed at the Dexter American Legion Hall. A private interment will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Dexter.  In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 557, American Cancer Society or Faith Lutheran Church.
